Time for Public Officials to Take Their Stand One Way or the Other

I wrote the attached document on June 26, 2017, the day the U.S. Supreme Court perfidiously & unconstitutionally ordered all States of the Union to approve homosexual sodomy marriage. I had awakened that morning with the distinct sense while praying that I should write something, not knowing it was the day that Court would issue its opinion. I was actually attempting to write something fairly conciliatory, something akin to a Christian “respect-the-authorities” type of essay.

However, while I was writing it, someone called me to tell me that the Supreme Court had ruled for homosexual marriage. A year and a half of study, prayer, & righteous anger came boiling out. I had delayed about six months after reading the Windsor opinion, issued June 2013, in which 5 Justices had told the federal government it could not state that there is only one form of marriage, that is, heterosexual. I was shocked with the lack of judicial professionalism in that opinion. And I had to agree with Justice Scalia that those same 5 Justices were simply waiting till the time they could “get away with” imposing homosexual marriage on the entire country.

When I say righteous anger came boiling out, I do not mean that it was a reckless writing. It was a concise, efficient statement of what I had realized in studying the matter for a year and a half before the June 26, 2015, Obergefell opinion. It briefly summed up a lot of thought.

I wrote it while I was the Legal Director for the Alabama Administrative Office of Courts. My boss, Rich Hobson, was appointed by Chief Justice Roy Moore to his position as Director of AOC. The writing was entirely my own. Upon finishing it, I wanted to spread it far & wide. My idea was to send it to every AL legislator, the governor, & get it published in AL.com, an internet news service in Alabama. I began by sending an email to the Governor’s Legal Advisor, but the essay was not addressed to anyone but “public officials.” I didn’t even sign it as the author. I put it together too quickly. I also sent a copy to one Alabama Senator, knowing he would be sympathetic to the thoughts expressed.

I was trying to find a way to publish it with Al.com, but had a hard time figuring out how to do that. At that time, I didn’t know any of the reporters with Al.com. I was unsuccessful. During this scurrying around trying to spread it far & wide, I suddenly had 2nd thoughts, saying to myself, “Is it really wise to immediately try to send this out to everyone in the world?” I thought it wise to sit back & think about it. My boss’ boss, Chief Justice Roy Moore, was already in the national limelight with his writings & public comments about the issue. Did I really need to expose him to more criticism by publishing something that could be wrongly linked to him? I didn’t send it anywhere else.

But it was too late. I received a call from a reporter with Al.com the following week asking about the letter. Apparently, someone in Governor Bentley’s press office had sent the letter to Al.com. I didn’t find a way to get it to them, but someone else did. It became a typical headline for news gatherers to say something like this: “Staff Attorney for Roy Moore sends harsh letter to Governor about Supreme Court Same Sex Marriage Opinion.” I ended up apologizing not for the writing but for allowing it to appear that it was directed solely toward Governor Bentley. I also received a reprimand from Chief Justice Moore. He thought I should be more careful with my writings. There was one sort of funny article online with the headline: “Roy Moore reprimands Staffer for being too much like Roy Moore.” It wasn’t a fair headline, but it was funny.

When asked in a 2nd telephone interview with Al.com if I regretted sending or writing the letter, I didn’t say I regretted writing it. I said that I regretted sending it to the Governor’s legal advisor. I said it was not directed toward the Governor, but it was meant for all public officials.

Richard Cohen of the Southern Poverty Law Center called for my resignation. When told I had directed it toward all public officials, not just the Governor, he said that was even worse. I didn’t get fired by Roy Moore, but I did get fired almost a year & a half later by the acting Chief Justice taking Roy Moore’s place after his suspension without pay by the Court of the Judiciary. I have wondered if my firing was to placate Richard Cohen & his type. Or was it the plaintiff trial lawyers getting back at me after my assisting Perry Hooper, Sr. to become Chief Justice during & after that contentious Chief Justice election of 1994.? Hard to tell.

Those events essentially proved the key point I was trying to make with the writing – that persecution of those who stand for scripture is inevitable after Obergefell. I took it down from social media to avoid causing harm in any way to Roy Moore. But why I have waited till now, almost a year after my termination as Legal Director of AOC, I don’t know. It needed to be said. It was called “harsh,” but in reading it again, I can’t call it harsh. It’s direct & uncompromising, but I can’t call it harsh.

I think I regret using one word, calling public officials “cowards.” I have been a coward many times, & I suppose you could call me a coward for taking it off social media & in not putting it back up since my firing. You could possibly call me a hypocrite. However, I can’t change that word because Obergefell is so clearly a lying, tyrannical, & lawless opinion. How can public officials who are sworn to uphold the law & constitution able to uphold it with a straight face?!

I want to put it back in the public eye because it seems people can get lulled into a somnambulant state. We’re not facing the possibility of persecution as Christians who believe in the bible; we’re already there. It is impossible to avoid. Any appeal to some neutral respect for religion or natural law tolerance of religious belief will fail. The civil government must side with one or the other – Christ or man. There is no middle ground. Polytheism won’t work. It must enforce its determinations, & it has determined that homosexuality shall be approved & accepted.

Did you really believe America would become a place for your juvenile dream of persecution? Someone putting a gun to your head & saying, “Renounce Christ, or you die?” It’s not going to happen like that. They will tolerate your belief as long as you don’t assert the rights of Christ to rule the United States & the world now. If you don’t make waves & say,” I’m waiting for Jesus Christ to return before saying He rules,” they’ll leave your Christianity alone. But tell them they’re traitors to the true King, King Jesus, by the issuance of their so-called laws, & you’ll face their wrath.

So get ready. If you plan to run for public office, get ready to stand for God & face what Roy Moore received or worse. Or you can kowtow, compromise your conscience, & end up persecuting your brothers & sisters who do stand for Christ. Which stand would you rather defend when you stand before the Judge of the universe on the Day of Judgment?
