The Matrix – Post 4 – Gnosticism?

Is there Gnosticism in The Matrix?

Some might argue that this movie represents a gnostic form of Christianity. Gnosticism was a Christian heresy strongly condemned by the Apostle John in I John. The physical world, its attractions, its temptations, were for the gnostic repulsive; he wanted to escape from the physical world. Before death, how does one do that? Gnostics believed in knowledge as salvation. Knowledge is not the key to salvation, but it is a part. The knowledge of Christ, the knowledge of the need one has for a savior, the knowledge of God’s power to save and His authority to forgive, etc. All this knowledge is key to our faith and our salvation. Gnosticism was different. Gnosticism held to an idea that if we just realized that what we’re living in is not real, then we will live above “the real.”  The gnostics sometimes even denied that Christ died or that he had lived in a human body; he just appeared as a specter and seemed to live in a body. And he didn’t really die; he just moved on to the spiritual world to which he belonged. All rank falsehoods that completely undermine the Christian faith. In the movie, Morpheus speaks of “the desert of the real,” and Neo is told by a child who can bend spoons with his mind to try to believe the truth, that there is no spoon.

Last Means Last Except . . . post 2

A Never-Ending Last Days

We also use the word “last” to describe days past, not future. “In the last few days” would be an example. But that would be stretching the meaning of “last” too far in the Hebrews passage. Clearly, the author is speaking of the end of something because he warns people about something passing away and of something else appearing and that they should view those “last” days in faith, as if they’re headed toward a destination, a goal, a finish. But the finish is something better than what was past, not something worse. Those who suffered in the past were giving their lives for us, for something to come, for something better. Hebrews 11. The Israelites who left Egypt were headed somewhere; they wandered because of disobedience, not because the goal could not be accomplished. The “last” days refers to the time just before the accomplishment of the mission or goal for which the faithful saints gave their lives.

The Savior of Science-The Faithfulness of God means the Reliability of Legitimate Science post 1

God’s faithful Word means the reliability of science’s laws

Your religion determines your view of reality; it affects everything about your world & how you see it.  Whether we create our own from our own perspective or that religious perspective is given to us by someone else, we end up shaping our reality around it because we have decided it is the reality behind our reality, so to speak.

The Matrix – Caveats

Having made some glowing statements about this movie, I have to add some caveats. First, there is a dearth of explicit reference to sin or anything comparable. Normally, I wouldn’t demand a movie present each aspect of orthodox theology, but The Matrix follows that theology so closely, it seemed important to me that something so important not be left out.  Otherwise, one could interpret this movie as some sort of gnostic presentation, which it may have been intended to be.  I do not know.

The Book of Acts & the Last Days

The Disciples Acted Like the End was Near

Consider the book of Acts. In Acts 2, after the crowd made comments about the disciples appearing drunk, Peter preaches and quotes from the prophet Joel:

“For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy: And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come: And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.'” Acts 2:15-21.

The Gift of Knowledge & Feeding the Sheep 2

The Church’s Responsibility – To Feed the Sheep, even Public Officials

Shepherd keeping the sheep

For example, in the twentieth century, the Protestant Churches of America (The Roman Catholic Church was subject to fewer problems in this area because of its governmental structure & approach to theology) saw a conflict arise to divide whole denominations – the liberal, higher criticism theologians & teachers, who denied major tenets of biblical faith. One of their major beliefs was in the church’s responsibility for social reform. Conservatives who opposed them thought they were entering into a realm that God had forbidden for the church to enter. Therefore, the conservative believers ended up with disdain for social reform, particularly after seeing the leftist political policies advocated by liberals of the church.  (And I’m not referring to a political position when I say “conservative” or “liberal” in this context. I’m referring to a belief in the fundamentals of the Christian faith.)  Piles of books have been written about the controversy. I want to focus on one aspect of the debate, & I’ll be taking conservatives to task for one of their positions.

The Matrix – Chosen by Someone from Outside your World

The Matrix posits an entire world in which people think they’re living in reality but are really living in a dreamworld created by a super-intelligence. In this world, some people realize something is wrong “like a splinter in your mind,” as Morpheus tells Neo. The Matrix is all around; you can feel it when you go to work, when you go to church. “It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you to the truth.” The truth that everyone is a “slave, born into bondage, born into a prison that you cannot smell or feel or taste, a prison for your mind.”

The Matrix – Too Complex to Pin Down

The Matrix has been studied from so many perspectives, perhaps showing how brilliant the movie is.  There’s really no telling what the beliefs of the movie’s makers are; there’s such a montage of meaning in it.  Analyzing all the underlying meaning is daunting, but that is not my goal with movies.  Because I want to edify my Christian faith when watching a movie, I’m always going to gravitate to the biblical meanings that were either intentionally or accidentally in the movie.  I believe it appears in all aspects of life even in artistic works.  I don’t contend that there are no other meanings; I just don’t see the need to go there.  Reviewing it from a biblical perspective only is still daunting.  In the Matrix are the obvious Christian messages and the not so obvious. But it’s odd for a movie to be so wrapped up into a worldview that so parallels the Christian or biblical worldview as The Matrix does.  It will take several posts to get anywhere with this movie, so here are my initial thoughts.
