Today’s preachers might tell David the following when he inquired about fighting Goliath in a man-to-man combat to the death, which would decide the fate of Israel:
“You’re presumptuously meddling with something that’s too far above your head. We don’t think you’re reformed in your thinking; the sovereign God can take care of that giant. Leave it to the professionals. You’ll be killed needlessly, thus bringing discredit on the cause of the kingdom. It’s just boasting by that giant; you don’t want to get into some type of proud game of ‘I dare you,’ do you? You’ll be just as bad as Goliath by stooping to his level of violence and antagonism. It’s peace and reconciliation that we must have, not fighting and arguing. Who knows? Perhaps his religious beliefs have some value; how are you so sure that you’re completely right? Can’t we learn from others through common grace? Why be so exclusive; maybe we should live and let live with the Philistines. Any way, it’s political; why get tangled up in such?! God has no specific template as to how His people are supposed to be ruled. Perhaps we’ll get more evangelism accomplished if we’re persecuted under Philistine rule? ”

Think about a competition in the world on the scale of the Super Bowl, where everyone tries to have the brightest light. Context: Throughout the history of mankind, it has been nighttime 24 hours a day. Therefore, it’s more than a competition; it’s about finding your way, perhaps even survival, as you seek the man with the brightest light. Some men carry candles, and those with the brightest candles others follow. Still others come up with other ways to carry an even brighter light than that of a candle, and those seeking light follow them. These are the best of mankind, the ones others follow, the ones with the brightest light. Some were frauds, but some were truly great.
Then one day, an amazing and unprecedented thing happens – the sun rises on the earth for the first time. Yet those who we thought were the best of men continue carrying their lights – in broad daylight. Those with the brightest light call on others to follow them, as if the sun had not risen. You have been following one of those men with a very bright light, a light which is now barely visible. Yet he calls you to continue following him. You look around and see things you’ve never seen before, and you now have the light to get around without the light of the man you’ve been following, a man you thought was a great man. What do you think of him now that he demands you continue to follow his light in broad daylight as if the sun had never risen? His light is so tarnished as to eclipse all of its former brilliance. You wonder what you saw in him that caused you to follow him. You don’t even consider continuing your former life. You would have to shut your eyes to the sun and pretend it didn’t exist to continue to follow that man. His judgment seems worse than imperfect; it is fatally corrupted in your sight.

The Most Potent, One-Sentence Gospel Message
Before we get to the question that the title immediately arouses, which is “What is this one-sentence gospel message that is so potent?,” let’s talk about the typical statements used by preachers & see where they fail. When I discuss the following statements, I’m assuming that there’s nothing else said. It’s possible to recover something of value from the following statements, if we spend the time & energy to do so. But I want to find that ideal statement, that is, the one that expresses the truth of the gospel in the most complete, effective, & concise way. Stephen’s Defense – Acts 7
Stephen’s Defense – Acts 7
I. High Priest: “Are these things so?” “These things” were the accusations of blasphemy against Moses (no such biblical prohibition against blasphemy toward a deceased person), blasphemy against God, blasphemy against “this holy place,” & blasphemy against the law. Specifically, the men contending with Stephen said he said that Jesus would destroy this place & change the customs delivered by Moses. While reading Stephen’s brilliant defense in chap. 7, listen for any blasphemy of the type of which he’s accused. His 53-verse speech is a historical survey of the Jewish people. Along with evidence of blasphemy, listen for references to the temple & to what he focuses on in Israel’s history.
Ruth’s Acts Evidence a New Heart Formed by God’s Special Grace in Covenant Adoption
Ruth was saved
Ruth, the Moabitess, is a heroine of faith on the same level as Rahab. It is no wonder then that she also comes to be a part of the genealogical line leading to Israel’s greatest Kings, David and his greater son, Jesus Christ. Her faith, which was demonstrated in her acts of faith, was deep and persevering, thus showing that her faith was based on much more than sentimental attachment to her mother-in-law. Her acts showed a deep work in her heart by the God of salvation, the God who promised that those “shalt find him, if [they] seek him with all [their] heart and with all [their] soul.”[1]
Heresies, Liberals, & Galatians 5:20
Heresies, Galatians 5:20
The ESV fails dramatically in certain portions of the scripture, indicating either a deception that has crept into the conservative view of scripture or a purposeful attempt to subvert the scripture by a liberal or liberals among the Translation editors. The error as to one particular word in the list of the works of the flesh is a deadly error in that it relieves heretics of having their sin in the list of those works. And it works to the benefit of those who attack, undermine, and take over conservative denominations.
Paul Didn’t Go to the 3rd Heaven
Paul didn’t go to the 3d Heaven
In II Cor. 11:16, Paul states: “I say again, Let no man think me a fool; if otherwise, yet as a fool receive me, that I may boast myself a little.” He then spends 17 verses talking about God’s work through him and his credentials as a Jew and as an Apostle. Then, without skipping a beat, chapter 12 begins with: “It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.”
Those seeking to lead the church of Corinth astray had been boasting about their credentials, so Paul admits embarrassingly that he is boasting and glorying. “Howbeit whereinsoever any is bold, (I speak foolishly,) I am bold also.” II Cor. 11:21b. But Paul did it for the sake of the people at the Church of Corinth, who were being led astray by slanderers of Paul. “And why? Because I do not love you? God knows I do!” II Cor. 11:11.

The Trinity, an eternally existing community of equally-divine persons living in perfect harmony & love, defines the ideal community. The Trinity explains the basis for God’s creation of plural persons & how He expects them to live in community. Otherwise, how would a single, lone Creator even have a concept of community among equals. Even if He had created angels of equal dignity, how does this Creator, who had never had to deal with anyone as an equal, teach them to live as equals?

The Legal Effects of Christ Coming to Earth as a Baby
The Legal Effects of Christ Coming to Earth as a Baby
Before we can understand the legal effect of Christ being born in a stable in Bethlehem approximately two thousand years ago, we first have to understand what the earth’s and humanity’s legal status was before.
Adam and Eve, and, by family relation, all their descendants, were criminals before God. And not just any criminals; they were traitors who had defied a specific, simple law to not eat of one of the trees in the Garden in which God had placed them. They defied God and His law, they trespassed upon property which God had reserved for Himself, they stole from that property, and they conspired with God’s chief enemy in order to attempt to take God’s rule from Him. We know this from the account in Genesis chapters Continue reading “The Legal Effects of Christ Coming to Earth as a Baby”
