Jacob abandoned, dreaming the way to heaven

Third, in only one event in his life did Jacob ever deceive anyone – his father, when his mother ordered him to pretend to be his brother, Esau, in order to receive his father’s blessing. But let’s look at that situation in its entirety. All of Jacob’s life, his father Isaac had disobeyed God and ignored his wife. His wife, Rebecca, had heard from God Himself that Jacob was to receive the birthright. Yet, Isaac ignored the word of God, preferring his own interests in Esau the hunter and in the human law that required that the inheritance and birthright go to the firstborn. For over 40 years, instead of listening to God’s word and analyzing the character of his sons based on what they placed as priorities, Isaac followed legalism and his own desire. Rebecca knew this, and even Isaac admitted this when he proclaimed about Jacob after the deception: “And he will be blessed.” How could Jacob be truly blessed by taking something by fraud? Could not Isaac have said the opposite? Something like: “Jacob, you stole the blessing by deception; therefore, it is invalid. It shall go to Esau.”

Jacob – A Bad Rap

Whenever you hear a message involving Jacob, you hear about how he was such a deceiver, manipulator, and cheating scoundrel.  AT best, these messages are superficial in their analysis of the story of Jacob and Esau. It is often cloaked in some misled intent of showing that God saves and blesses even the sinner. But this is the overwhelming message of the bible – God saves sinners. However, it is not contrary to that message to recognize good characters in the bible, knowing all the while that they also are sinners in need of grace. Daniel and Joseph are perfect examples. They were men of good, even sterling, character, yet we don’t get misled and think that they had no sin.

Is it a Sin by a Reformed Church to Deny Communion to Baptized Children?

It Is An Offense to Deny Communion to Baptized Children

Get this discussion in a pdf document:  It is an Offense to Deny Communion to Baptized Children

I had to leave my church service prior to communion one night recently because of the minister’s reading of the basis for excluding children from the Table. How can I enjoy the Lord’s Supper, when my younger brothers and sisters are being unjustifiably excluded? Could such be an offense against one of these little ones?

Biblical Judicial System – Who Shall Issue the Law?

Who Shall Issue the Law?

“Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you. And ye answered me, and said, The thing which thou hast spoken [is] good [for us] to do. So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes. And I charged your judges at that time, saying, Hear [the causes] between your brethren, and judge righteously between [every] man and his brother, and the stranger [that is] with him. Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; [but] ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment [is] God’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring [it] unto me, and I will hear it. And I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do.” Deuteronomy 1:13-18.

Matthew 24 – Correct Interpretation

Jesus Did Not Try to Trick Us

Let’s get one thing out of the way. When you encounter a scripture passage with clearly literal elements mixed with symbolic or allegorical elements, you interpret the literal parts literally and the allegorical parts allegorically, not the other way around. Second, everyone recognizes symbols in scripture, including those who shout the loudest about not interpreting the scripture symbolically. Third, you interpret the bible’s symbols using the bible’s symbols, not your modern spin on those symbols. These three points will take you a long way toward interpreting the bible, not only correctly, but also much more intelligibly.

Cooper, the Father, promising his daughter he’ll return

“Interstellar” came out in 2014. It’s about time and family, but it contains a theological explanation of covenant family and dominion also. Long before seeing it and while sitting in a doctor’s waiting room, I picked up a magazine and noticed an article about the movie. It explained that the makers went to an actual theoretical physicist to learn how to represent a black hole and a worm hole in the movie’s special effects. The scientist allegedly took the equations governing the theoretical operations of these phenomena and matched it with special effects software for a video representation. But when they actually saw the image the equations created, they had made an entirely new scientific discovery as to the operation of the phenomena. Perhaps the first time that a scientific discovery occurred within the special effects process in the making of a movie. Continue reading “Interstellar”

This issue is critical to the veracity of the scriptures. If poetry was God’s purpose in inspiring the writer, whom we assume was Moses, then we’ve lost much of the distinction between the biblical account and the myths of other religions. Any religion can contend that its view of the origin of the universe is a “spiritual” or allegorical or “poetic” view. The believer in the bible claims that his book, the bible, is not a myth but contains the inerrant statement as to the true Creator God. If we give up that contention and make Genesis 1 another “poetic” account, then we have given up the key argument that Jesus Christ is the only saving name under heaven. Once the facts of Genesis are acknowledged as mere allegory, then secular science fills the gap with process as the actual and true history of what happened. Process means God didn’t really create instantaneously out of nothing the life and substance of the earth. God had a part in the process; perhaps he initiated it, but the rest was chance mutation and erosion. The Creator God of the bible becomes something other than the One who speaks and matter comes to be. What about Psalm 104? If Jesus’ Father was not the biblical Creator who spoke matter out of nothing based on His word, then it’s quite a leap to assert that Christ could speak miracles into the historical, time-based, physical world.

Adam knew the universe was created in six evenings and mornings

Adam knew the universe was created in six evenings and mornings or he would have told his descendants otherwise.

Genesis is history, not science.  Genesis 1 says that Adam was created the sixth day according to Genesis 1. God rested the seventh day. Does it make any sense that God would leave Adam in the dark about the creation time period? There are two reasons in the text that show that Adam would have known the time period – the Sabbath day and Eve.

Biblical Judicial System – A Unique System of Laws

A Unique System of Laws

Israel’s system of government, including its judiciary, was unique in the ancient world, purposely so. It was meant to cause God’s chosen people to stand out. It was the ideal system, meant to demonstrate how wise God’s people were, not in themselves, but in the law they had. “Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.” Deuteronomy 4:6. However, more importantly, it was also the society and system of government into which the Messiah was to be born and live. How much more should it have been the ideal and model for the world of what God wants?
